Scenic River Land Trust Acquires 630 Acre Easement

The Scenic River Land Trust(SRLT) primary mission is the acquisition of conservation easements to help protect open space and the watersheds of our rivers.mLast week, SRLT and Maryland Environmental Trust Boards approved a conservation easement on 630 acres in the South River Greenway in Crownsville! This will become a County park for passive recreational use for the public.

With this wonderful space, the SRLT has an opportunity for a number of activities for the public.   They still need volunteers for the South River Greenway tree-planting on October 25th from 10:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. Here’s your chance to get some exercise in the fresh air and leave your mark as over 1200 trees restore 4 acres along the headwaters of Bacon Ridge Branch. Families with children are welcome with adult supervision. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves and/or shovels (marked with your name) if you have them. Directions follow. WOW!! What a Great Walk!

So-I thought I’d go for a walk.  The Scenic Rivers Land Trust folks were hosting a walk in the woods this morning on the South River Greenway.  The Greenway is all the land on the Crownsville Hospital grounds on the far side of I-97.  They’re schedule offered bird walks, a strenuous hike, a walk to an old mill, and a family walk.

The first bird walk was at 7:30 a.m.  I don’t do 7:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings.  Fortunately, they had one at 8:30 a.m.  That one and the walk to the old mill would be just about right to explore this new area. (Keep reading — this experience is worth learning about – photos, too.) Continue reading WOW!! What a Great Walk!

A beautiful site in AA County

A beautiful site in AA County

For several years I had the pleasure of serving on the board of the Scenic Rivers Land Trust. When I started it was called the Severn River Land Trust. Board members were volunteers.  They dedicated their time and gave generously of their expertise and resources to promote its purpose: to protect “land through voluntary methods such as conservation easements and educating landholders on issues of conservation and stewardship.  They have protected a good deal of land and, with it, the way of life we enjoy – without most of us even knowing it.  On April 18, you can enjoy a piece of Anne Arundel wilderness at the SRLT’s 4th Annual Walk for the WoodsSouth River Greenway.
