Diary of Anne Frank -A Play about a Young Girl Played by Young Actors

Diary of Anne FrankWhen Indian Creek School faculty member and drama director Anne Crossman chose The Diary of Anne Frank as the fall drama for performance by the student at Indian Creek’s Upper School, she did so know she had not made an easy choice.  The play would challenge the student actors theatrically and emotionally.

The theatrical challenge keeps all actors on stage for the entire play.  That means even when a character is silent and sitting still, he/she is performing.

The emotional challenge goes much deeper.  Although the students have studied the Holocaust, playing real people who suffered the ultimate fate helped them develop a deep sense of purpose for their performances.  They were deeply moved by the play and will transfer that emotion to their audience.

Anne Frank is played by senior and Indian Creek stage veteran Neena Boyle.  Joining her on stage are Tyler Cohen, Lindsey Elling, Samantha Couto, Robby Montgomery, Liza Slutskaya, Dawson Olsen, Gunner Sledgeski, Marylee Morrison, Vitaly Mayes, Sam Roush, Isaac Helfman, and Max Hall.

All technical aspects of the production will be handled by a student technical crew.  ICS teacher and technical director MaryBeth Duckett has worked with the crew to bring the Annex to the stage.

The Upper School students will perform in a preview for Middle School students and for a group from Aleph Bet Jewish Day School on Friday morning.  They will perform for the public on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Jack and Nancy Becker Center for the Performing Arts at the Upper School campus on 1130 Anne Chambers Way in Crownsville.

Tickets are available at boxoffice@indiancreekschool.com for $10 each or at the door.  The Eagles Nest, the school store, will be open at intermission for refreshments.

The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, newly adapted by Wendy Kesselman. Based upon Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Performed through an arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

Anything Goes — Great!

Last night in Crownsville, an amazing group of young people realized the result of their weekends, mornings,  and nights of work.  Indian Creek Upper School students presented Cole Porter’s Anything Goes to an enthusiastic audience at the Jack and Nancy Center for the Performing Arts on the Indian Creek School Upper School Campus.

Billy, Reno, Moonface, Bonnie, Hope and Sir Evelyn had the audience on their feet with the convoluted love stories based on  the years of the New Deal.  Ensemble taps numbers revealed the depth of talent in the cast.  Solos, duets and trios showcased the vocal range of the main characters.

The songs are familiar — I get a Kick Out of You, Easy to Love, You’re the Top, Friendship, Delovely, and, of course, Anything Goes are so familiar that they could be risky for a young cast.  The gang pulled them off with skill and joy all accompanied by the pit orchestra playing from the upper deck of the SS American on stage.

You can catch a great couple o hours of entertainment tonight at 7:00 p.m. or tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.  Tickets are only $10 each and available at the door.  For directions to Indian Creek’s Upper School Camps, google the intersection of Crownsville Road and Hawkins Road.  You’ll see the sign right there.

Girls’ High School Lacrosse Comes to Crownsville

Girls’ high school varsity lacrosse comes to Crownsville this Saturday when six great area teams meet on the fields at Indian Creek School’s Upper School campus.  Join me for The Indian Creek Pre-season Girls’ Lacrosse Tournament when the first games start at 10:30 a.m.

The Indian Creek Girls Varsity Team will be joined by Rockbridge Academy, also of Crownsville, Key School of Annapolis, Towson Catholic High School, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel from Essex, and Glenelg Country School from Howard County.  Rockbridge faces Towson Catholic, and Key takes on Mt. Carmel for the 10:30 games. (Does Key have the upper hand here — they will have played three of these teams this week.)

Second round play begins at 11:45 when ICS faces the winner of the Key-Mt. Carmel match, and Glenelg Country School goes against the winner of the Rockbridge-Towson Catholic game. Games continue at 1:00 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. with the tournament final for the championship at 4:45 p.m. Top four tournament teams will walk away with trophies for the day.

I’ll be helping out parents and students at the concession stand with plenty to sustain all you spectators throughout the day. Head coach Erin Morris is predicting victory for the ICS Eagles. Whatever the outcome, everyone wins with great games all day.
