I love bread. I could make a meal out of bread. Fresh bread is the best thing in the world. Unfortunately, as much as I like bread, I hate going grocery shopping. It’s just as well– I don’t need to eat that much bread.
Still, the other day after a long work day, I had my mouth set for crusty bread that could be dipped in some nice basil and garlic olive oil. I really dreaded the thought of heading into Annapolis in search of my palate’s desire. I decided I would make some bread. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Since I didn’t think I couldn’t make bread, obviously I could.
I charged ahead with the intent of making foccacio. I measured out flour, salt, sugar, and grabbed the jar of yeast from a Christmas baking project. I opened the jar– it wasn’t yeast at all, just a jar I had used to store, I don’t know what. I was far enough into the ordeal that nothing but homemade bread would do.
I poked around in my self-chilling Fibber Magee’s closest — the fridge. I found some quick rise yeast.
