News from the Friends of Community Services Center at Crownsville

Friends and Members of Community Services Center at Crownsville (CSCC):

(Note- This is a group of concerned citizens who have been working on behalf of non-profits for the future of the Crownsville Hospital Campus)

Just a short note to report that yesterday’s live radio interview went well.  I was able to cover most of the basic ideas and vision we have for the future of the hospital.  I was interviewed by News Director Karl Magenhofer.  He is very supportive of the plan and indicated that we needed more air time and another interview to complete the whole story.  I promised him to keep him in the loop of information and whenever WNAV was ready, I would return with some more information and details. (I hope it’s not on a holiday afternoon at 2 P.M. again – I doubt if anyone listened).

The Capital Newspaper today has another editorial today about the hospital.  Basically it is calling for the officials to take some action on their statements about the future of the campus.  Included is a statement:  “We have advocated making the property a central location for the offices of nonprofit organizations. Some of which are currently housed there. Leopold has also promoted the site as a ‘supercampus of nonprofits.’ So have many other organizations, including a consortium of nonprofits currently operating at the former hospital; the consortium made this suggestions long before any politician announced his candidacy.” For the whole editorial see: www.hometownannapolis.com. We should very pleased with the attention, momentum and progress the our proposal is making.

The next meeting of CSCC is Friday, June 18, 2010 at 11:00 at the Food Bank.  We will be making plans for the future such as another Open House designed for churches and non profits.  This is a critical time for us in our response to our exposure.  What we do now will have great bearing on our success.  Please make time to join the meeting and help with ideas and input.

Owen Taylor, Board Chairman

Another Job Fair at Fort Meade- Nov. 4

A good blogger writes original content for readers.  When the content is as important as a really big job fair, I think it’s best to provide the words straight from the organizer.  Below is the press release provided by Mr. Jerome Duncan.  His information is as follows:

Del. King Speaks at GHCCA Meeting

The May meeting of the Generals Highway Council of Community Associations met on Tuesday, May 12 with a pleasant change of venue.  Every corner of Historic Baldwin Hall was filled with a variety of community activities.   The GHCCA’s usual basement meeting room was no exception so we were able to meet in the historic reconstructed schoolhouse behind Baldwin Hall – a delightful place for our meetings.

Among the items on the evening’s agenda was a report on zoning and development.   The Fisher property in Crownsville has requested a zoning change; however, the information on the request has not been publicly available.    Dutton Farm, next to Carriage Hills has posted a sign advertising hot tubs and spas creating a zoning question.

The main agenda item for the evening was guest speaker, Delegate James King from district 33A.   Del. King has represented the district since January 2007.  His presentation for the evening recapped the most recent legislative session. Continue reading Del. King Speaks at GHCCA Meeting

The – You’ll Never Make Any Other Peanut Butter Cookie Again–Cookies

Peanut butter cookies take me back to my childhood.  My mother made them, and I got to do the cross-hatched smooshing down of the cookie ball with a fork.  They were delicious.    I don’t make them much anymore.  Mostly, because I don’t need to eat cookies, but primarily because if I’m going to go to the trouble of making cookies, they’ll be chocolate chip.

This recipe has changed my mind.  The cookies happen to be flourless which is great for those with gluten issues, but mostly they happen to be easy and delicious.  My daughter-in-law, Christina,  found the recipe on the site, Joy the Baker, a great site for anyone who loves to bake or eat or both.  The recipe has only four simple ingredients and takes almost no time to assemble.  Unfortunately, it takes almost no time to eat the two dozen cookies that you get!

Flourless Peanut Butter Cookies from Joy the Baker

  • 1 cup all-natural chunky or smooth peanut butter
  • 1 cup sugar (1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease a baking sheet with butter and set aside.  In a mixer combine peanut butter and sugars until well combined, about 2 minutes.  Add egg and baking soda and mix for another 2 minutes.  Roll into walnut sized balls and create a criss-cross pattern with a fork.  If you’d like, add a few chocolate pieces to the top of the cookies. (My son Stefan just mixed chocolate chips right into the batter.) Bake for 10 minutes, until lightly browned.  Cool on a baking sheet for two minutes, minutes. Enjoy!

GHCCA Meeting Full of Info Important to You

Crownsville, April 14: The basement of Historic Baldwin Hall is a rather stark place for a meeting.  The ambience created by the cinder block walls is accented or rather punctuated by the thumbing on the ceiling of what I’m sure are graceful dancers upstairs in the main room.

It really doesn’t matter though because the information and the exchanges bring the place right to life.  This month’s guests provided information and insight into opportunities and issues affecting your quality of life.  Below are some of the highlights from the evening: Hammond’s Connection at the Dairy Farm; Brenda Reiber from the County Executive’s Office;  Gail Smith from County Councilman Josh Cohen’s Office; GHCCA President Richard Falk; and Sara Caldes from Severn Riverkeepers; Don Yeskey, County Affordability Committee.
