The great thing about summer is those impromptu dinners with neighbors. Some sort of afternoon outdoor activity leads to the, “hey, come on over for dinner” invitation. The response of “great, what can I bring” guarantees a certain equity that promotes the breezy casualness of the occasion.
I accepted such an invitation this weekend and cheerfully offered to bring a salad. I’d been to the grocery store the day before and ended up with a surfeit of lettuce having purchase a large package of hearts of escarole.
I’d been on vacation, and obviously my brain had not yet returned. While I had lettuce, I hadn’t purchased much else. I had a few little pear tomatoes, but that was about it. I was honor bound. I had made the offer, and I needed to come through with a salad that would work with grilled seafood. Continue reading Kumquat Summer Salad- Once in a Lifetime Experience!

I’ve noticed that a lot of viewers seem to be interested in composting these days. I don’t have anything scientific to add to my last post, but I can tell you about some unusual outcomes since then.
Last summer, I had filled a flower bed with the black gold from the compost bin. As the summer days warmed the soil, and the rain provided some much needed moisture, I was pleased to see that the iris rhizomes I had transplanted to the new bed were thriving. They were putting out beautiful green leaves creating a bed of graceful “V’s” in the landscape. But there was more. Continue reading A Golden Treasure from the Compost Pile
Back in 1994 someone in Hampden looked back and around and came up with a surefire winner of an idea. Fifteen years later, Honfest up in Bawlmer is a weekend full of arts, crafts, entertainment, food, and, of course, the beehive hairdo of the 1960′s. I had a great time, and I’m ready to go again next year. Continue reading Mark this one on your calendar , Hon!

Saturday morning dawned a little gloomy, but it quickly turned into one of those perfect late spring days. Dry air in the low 70′s created an excellent climate for walking. Normally, I’d stay home and launch into the usual weekend chores, but my son invited me to go for a cup of coffee in Annapolis. Our adventure quickly became the great cupcake quest and tour of Annapolis. Continue reading Take the Cupcake Tour of that Town Next to Crownsville
