The newest diagnosis for what’s wrong with all of us is NDD – Nature Deficiency Disorder. Think about it – in the house, at the computer, in the car, at work, even doing yard work or exercising outside. Do we really ever just relax and look at what’s happening around us in nature. The Scenic River Land Trust has a prescription to treat NDD: two weekends in the South River Greenway on the Crownsville Hospital Center grounds with professional guidance! Serendipity…shortly before last month’s GHCCA meeting, Annie Medford, manager of Baldwin Hall, informed me that the Boy Scout meeting was expected to be unusually noisy, and suggested we hold our meeting in the small schoolhouse behind Baldwin Hall. I confess I didn’t know much about the place, but the meeting, with Del. James King, went well, and the reaction of the Council members to the new venue was universally positive. So we’ve decided to make the schoolhouse our new meeting location. Continue reading GHCCA has New, Historic venue – Next Meeting Coming Up
I love making salsa. It’s what I call one of those “concept” foods. Once you understand the concept behind its concoction, you can go crazy creating combinations. Years ago I made a simple mango salsa that was the perfect foil to a shrimp, Jack, sweet potato empanada– honestly the empanadas were great too.
Tomatillos have always intrigued me, and I’ve always enjoyed green salsa. When the grocery store was having a sale on tomatillos, I decided to give it a go. Here’s the results Continue reading Make Friends Green with Envy of this Salsa
Perfect timing – you can finish your spring cleaning then sell everything you’re getting rid of at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds’ annual June flea market on June 13. The Crownsville all-volunteer non-profit is accepting applications right now.
You can get a 10′x10′ indoor or outdoor vendor space. With it comes free admission and parking for your [...]
You may remember Megan King. She met another Megan, Megan West and got involved supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Megan’s foray into event fund-raising was a smashing success in Crownsville as she joined with the folks at Lures to present Cocktails for a Cause on May 14. The cocktail party to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation [...]
Crownsville’s biodiversity is rich by my standards — growing up in an industrial city, I saw a few squirrels and the occasional rabbit. We had robins, sparrows, starlings, blue jays and rare cardinal now and then.
Here, we have so much variety– plants and animals. I enjoy trying to grow some of that variety in my yard. [...]
For your summer time Crownsville brunch.
This recipe takes traditional French toast to a tasty new level. If you’re not having a brunch, have this dish for breakfast because the great thing about breakfast is that you can have dessert and call it a meal.
Serve with fresh fruit, bacon or sausage. Not bad with Mimosas or Bloody [...]
Strawberries-big, plump, red, juicy ones and lots of them. That’s what the Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Women will be serving up on May 30 at the annual Strawberry Festival and Flea Market. The event runs from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Let’s go right to the strawberry part. They’ll be preparing all those strawberries for your enjoyment. [...]
The May meeting of the Generals Highway Council of Community Associations met on Tuesday, May 12 with a pleasant change of venue. Every corner of Historic Baldwin Hall was filled with a variety of community activities. The GHCCA’s usual basement meeting room was no exception so we were able to meet in the historic reconstructed schoolhouse behind Baldwin Hall – a delightful place for our meetings.
Among the items on the evening’s agenda was a report on zoning and development. The Fisher property in Crownsville has requested a zoning change; however, the information on the request has not been publicly available. Dutton Farm, next to Carriage Hills has posted a sign advertising hot tubs and spas creating a zoning question.
The main agenda item for the evening was guest speaker, Delegate James King from district 33A. Del. King has represented the district since January 2007. His presentation for the evening recapped the most recent legislative session. Continue reading Del. King Speaks at GHCCA Meeting
