Living in Crownsville — Keeping H1N1 Flu in Perspective

The threat of morbidity and mortality from swine flu has captured our attention because people have died and because we feel threatened by the unknown.    None of us wants to die, and, when we hear from experts that this particular strain of pig-bird-people flu has been previously unknown, our instincts to protect ourselves and our loved ones engage. As we look for answers, we would do well to choose our sources wisely.  We would benefit, as well, by developing some perspective on influenza. A New Twist on Potato Salad for Summer

Having a Crownsville picnic?  One of my all-time favorites since my brother first corrupted my palate with it is potato chips and California Dip — or French Onion Dip.  I find it hard to justify sitting down and eating a bag of potato chips and a quart of dip anymore, so this idea struck me as the next best thing.  I can pretend it’s healthful — the ingredients are almost all natural. (I’ve never seen a bouillon plant!) Continue reading A New Twist on Potato Salad for Summer

WOW!! What a Great Walk!

So-I thought I’d go for a walk.  The Scenic Rivers Land Trust folks were hosting a walk in the woods this morning on the South River Greenway.  The Greenway is all the land on the Crownsville Hospital grounds on the far side of I-97.  They’re schedule offered bird walks, a strenuous hike, a walk to an old mill, and a family walk.

The first bird walk was at 7:30 a.m.  I don’t do 7:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings.  Fortunately, they had one at 8:30 a.m.  That one and the walk to the old mill would be just about right to explore this new area. (Keep reading — this experience is worth learning about – photos, too.) Continue reading WOW!! What a Great Walk!

GHCCA Meeting Full of Info Important to You

Crownsville, April 14: The basement of Historic Baldwin Hall is a rather stark place for a meeting.  The ambience created by the cinder block walls is accented or rather punctuated by the thumbing on the ceiling of what I’m sure are graceful dancers upstairs in the main room.

It really doesn’t matter though because the information and the exchanges bring the place right to life.  This month’s guests provided information and insight into opportunities and issues affecting your quality of life.  Below are some of the highlights from the evening: Hammond’s Connection at the Dairy Farm; Brenda Reiber from the County Executive’s Office;  Gail Smith from County Councilman Josh Cohen’s Office; GHCCA President Richard Falk; and Sara Caldes from Severn Riverkeepers; Don Yeskey, County Affordability Committee.
